Search Tips

Choose your terms carefully:
Remember different terms can have similar meanings:
e.g.  the concept of "industrial action" can also be expressed with the word "strike"

Truncation:
Truncation is automatic.
If your search term is "social" you will also get hits on "socialism" and "socialist"
But be careful! It doesn't work in reverse. The term "socialist" will not match with "social".

Multiple terms:
To search on multiple terms simply enter them with a space in between:
e.g. "communist strike".
If you are looking for a match on any of the search terms then select the "Match on ANY word" option
in the drop down menu beneath the search box. If you would like each result to include all of your search
terms then select the "Match on ALL words" option.

What are you searching?
The default search is to match the search terms with the keywords which have been assigned to each segment.
These keywords are based on the APAIS thesaurus but also include some personal and placed names.
A keyword search is the fastest search. However, a more complete search can be done by ticking the box
labeled "Include full text of transcripts in search". Your search terms will then be matched against all the words
in the transcripts as well as the keywords.

How many matches will I get?
The maximum number of matches for any search is 100.
